Battery Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to take responsibility for a customer’s battery and charger fleet using IBP’s maintenance services program. The ideal candidate for this position possesses the motivation and desire to enter IBP’s progressive Technician Certification Program to enhance their skills and knowledge to advance their position within the service department.
The ideal candidate for this position may or may not possess any prior battery maintenance/repair experience or knowledge. An inexperienced technician will enter the certification program at the level of a Tech Trainee and be offered the necessary training, testing, and experience to advance. An experienced technician may test through the certification program more rapidly, depending on their knowledge and skills, to advance their position.

- Occasional overtime and overnight travel
- Reports to Service/Branch Manager
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Evaluation of steel case industrial batteries requiring a hydrometer and voltmeter
- Evaluation of industrial chargers requiring an amp probe and voltmeter
- Scheduled maintenance repairs on industrial batteries and chargers requiring gas torch, pressure washer, air compressor, generator, drill, hot plate, recirculation and neutralization system, and numerous supplies
- Switching industrial batteries out of customer lift trucks by both side and overhead extraction to service
- Complete regular safety training to ensure knowledge of safe actions and environments
- Work safely within the provisions of IBP’s policies and procedures
- Responsible for the reporting of unsafe acts or environments to supervisor
- Maintain adequate parts stock in service vehicle
- Drive to and from customer locations in a fully equipped company vehicle, with occasional use of large box truck requiring a Class B CDL driver’s license with Hazmat and Air-Brakes endorsements
- Occasional overnight travel
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- High school degree, or equivalent
- Class B CDL with Air-Brakes and Hazmat endorsement
- If not possessed at hire, opportunity will be given to obtain license within given timeframe
- Must have excellent motor vehicle report to obtain license, and be insurable by IBP
- Consent for and ability to pass background check prior to hire including criminal, credit, and motor vehicle reports (state dependent)
- Consent for and ability to pass drug screening prior to hire
- Consent for and ability to pass random drug and alcohol screenings as a CDL driver
- Annual Lead and Zinc Screenings per OSHA guidelines
Preferred:
- Associates or Technical Degree/Training
- AC & DC Electrical Knowledge/Training
- Experience with gas torch for burning, voltmeter, hydrometer, and amp probe
- Forklift Certified
- Knowledge of geographical area
- Knowledge of Lift Truck Dealer territories and major end users
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to pick up 75 pounds from a standing position
- Must be able to handle/push a battery transfer cart with up to 2000 pounds on it
- Must be able to stand and work on feet for up to four hours without a break
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors with physical environments that are subject to temperature extremes and other conditions associated with warehouse operations. Additional PPE will be provided based on location conditions and requirements.
PPE REQUIREMENTS:
COMPANY Provided:
- Safety glasses
- Uniforms to be laundered by contracted uniform company
- Task specific PPE per OSHA guidelines
EMPLOYEE Provided:
- Water-resistant, steel-toed or composite safety boot with rubber, non-slip tread which covers the ankle
- IBP provides annual reimbursement for safety boots per current policy
